With the Australian Space Agency (ASA) becoming a reality, careers within the space industry are set to grow in Australia. And you don’t just have to be an astronaut or astronomer to get in on the Space action.

Think outside the box, scientists specialising in astrophysics, biology, chemistry, geology, medicine, meteorology, and physics. Technicians in communications, CAD, lasers, quality assurance, radar, robotics and satellites. Electricians. Aeronautical, avionics, instrumentation, computer, materials, mechanical, robotics and space craft engineers are amongst other fields that will be in demand. Not to mention to administrative and other related fields.

What type of person would these jobs suit?

  • Strong STEM skills and a passion for space exploration could help you stand out
  • You’ll need to be a great team player with good leadership qualities, who’s also capable of following instructions
  • Be inquisitive, innovative and great at problem solving in order to come up with solutions for problems and scenarios that are out of the ordinary
  • Good communication and listening skills are extremely important in this industry to avoid making mistakes and potentially costly mis-communications

If you’re keen to pursue a career in aerospace or one of the related industries, you’ll find there are many pathways that’ll get you there.

Lots of the professional roles will require at least a Bachelor degree, possibly even a Masters if you’re going to beat other competitors to the job. Look for degrees that offer internships, cadetships and other work experience roles, in addition to the qualification. Not only will you get experience which looks great on your CV, you’ll also be getting paid.

Study Bachelor of Space Science at RMIT and successfully complete it, you’ll be eligible for one of the Honours or Postgraduate programs.

Alternatively, you could start out with a Certificate II, III or IV in Aeroskills, like the one offered at TAFE Gippsland. It’s a 4-year apprenticeship course that will give you nationally recognised qualifications and work experience. You can go on to study a Diploma of Aeroskills, which could be a pathway to University and other further studies.




Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

Apprenticeship / Traineeship

Or VET qualification in Aeroskills

Working in this role, you’d be installing, maintaining and repairing aircraft engines,  mechanical structures, fuselage, undercarriage, electrical, instrument and radio systems. As well as aircraft structures and surface finishes.

You’d be working alongside or under the supervision of a degree qualified engineer.

Once you’ve received Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) trade certificate and had sufficient work experience, you could do further studies and become a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME).

You could expect to earn $70,000 once qualified & depending on experience and additional qualifications.

Technical Intelligence Assessment Analyst

Bachelor Degree

You could find yourself working in the Defence Intelligence Organisation in the Weapons and Technical Intelligence branch. Conduct complex research and engineering analysis of weapon systems, radars, sensors, platforms and military technologies.

This could be a pathway in the aerospace industry.

The salary range for this position is advertised from $67,000 – $92,000.

Electrical Engineer

Bachelor Degree

Design and develop new electrical system, solve problem and test equipment.

A career in this role could take you into the fields of robotics, deep space communications, control systems, extra-terrestrial GPS navigation and positioning, remote power generation and storage networks, imaging systems and more. All of which links nicely to the space industry.

The average salary listed for this industry is a whopping $91,000 per year.

Bachelor Degree

A degree in this field could lead to a career researching star formations, or working as a planetarium director. Responsible for forecasting geomagnetic storms for the BOM. The options are endless, but without doubt it will be related to the Space industry.

An entry level astrophysicist can expect to earn an average salary of $74,000 per year. But with some experience, you could easily be earning over $100,000 per year.
