Why students and schools should use this toolkit

Leaving school is the point where support drops away fastest. Students go from a timetable, a year adviser, and a room full of people doing the same thing, to sorting their own paperwork, money, and next steps.

• Are you ready for study? Key dates, applications, USI or NSN, preferences, accommodation, and orientation.
• Are you ready to start work? Resumes, cover letters, interviews, following up, and first day preparation.
• Are you ready to leave school? Private email, government services, electoral roll, health checkups, and basic life skills.
• Are you ready financially? Bank account, super or KiwiSaver, tax returns, budgeting, and avoiding buy now pay later.

• A weekly budget with 12 pre-filled cost categories and room to add more.

What’s new in the 2026 edition?

This is Edition 8 of the School Leaver Toolkit, our eighth year bringing the whole leaving school process together in one document.

The 2026 edition covers both Australia and New Zealand throughout, so a student in Auckland and a student in Adelaide each get the services, agencies, and support lines that apply where they live. Every link and service was checked at the time we made this edition available.

Government services, transport agencies, and support organisations do change. We recommend confirming details with the organisation before acting on them, and the toolkit names the official source every time so it is quick to check.

Who the School Leaver Toolkit is for

The toolkit was written with three readers in mind:

• Careers Advisors, Guidance Counsellors and Educators (School Licensed Edition) who want one transition resource they can share across a whole cohort without breaching a licence.
• Parents and Carers (Personal Edition) who want to know what their teenager needs to organise, and when.
• Year 11 and 12 students (Personal Edition) who are working out what comes after the final exam.

The School Licensed Edition is approved for sharing within your school community. You can email it to staff, post it on your intranet, or add it to a school-access careers page without breaching the licence. If your school runs more than one campus, choose the Two Campus or Three Campus option to cover them all. Basics and Ponder Member Schools do not need to purchase this. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When should students get the toolkit? Term 3 or early Term 4 of their final year works well. Enough time to act on the checklists before exams finish, and close enough that it still feels relevant.

Does it cover New Zealand as well as Australia? Yes. Every chapter covers both, including RealMe and myGov, IRD and tax file numbers, KiwiSaver and superannuation, and support services in each country.

Can we share this with our whole school? Yes, but only the School Licensed Edition is approved for that. It can be shared within a single school community, including with the parents and students enrolled at the school. Multi-campus schools can choose the Two or Three Campus licence.

Is the toolkit updated each year? Yes. We release a new edition every year. This 2026 edition is the latest version.
