What is inside the Gap Year Guide?

Travel is the part of this topic that moves fastest. Visa rules, border requirements, vaccination advice, and program costs change at short notice, so the guide tells students to confirm the details with providers and the relevant authorities before they commit. A guide that pretends otherwise is the one that leaves a student stuck at an airport.

• PLEASE NOTE: If your student has already picked their program, saved the money, deferred their offer, and squared it away with the family, they are past the stage this guide is built for. It’s great however if a Gap Year is an idea that a student is thinking about.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When should a student start planning a gap year? Before Year 12 finishes. Deferring an offer, saving money, and organising a visa all take longer than students expect. The guide sets out the planning steps so they can work backwards from their departure date.

Will a gap year hurt their chances of getting into university? The guide covers deferral in detail, including the catch that it is often unavailable for competitive courses. Where deferring is not possible, it explains how to track application dates and apply later.

How much does a gap year cost? There is no single figure. A year of fruit picking at home and a year of paid volunteer programs overseas are not the same expense. The guide includes a budget template and a savings tracker so students can work out their own number.

Does the guide only cover overseas travel? No. Travel is one of four paths. Work, volunteering, and learning get the same detail, and plenty of the options can be done without leaving the country.
