Ideas for Careers of the Future

The way we work is changing, and if we want to keep up then we need to be looking forward towards how we will work in the future, rather than focusing on the jobs of the past. With that in mind, I’d love to share a resource from 80,000 hours – The highest impact career paths.

80,000 hours is a not-for-profit based in the UK that wants to help us use our careers to take action and make an impact. They break down impactful career paths into a series of categories:

  1. Government and policy
  2. Organisation building
  3. Research
  4. Targeting niche problems
  5. Communicating ideas
  6. Earning to give

This could be a great resource for students who are driven to make a difference and looking to make an impact with their careers. They go on to list a stack of careers where young people could drive change, including working in Biorisk Strategy, AI, and Altruism, and you could use this with students and clients as an exploration tool, or just to start conversations about what might be possible outside of the traditional pathways.
