How to write a careers newsletter

A great newsletter is an excellent way to provide regular, relevant resources to your audiences.

They’re easy to distribute and can reach lots of people instantly, so when you’ve got careers news that you’d like to share, a newsletter could be the best way to go about it.

How to get started and write a careers newsletter

Create a template

 

Designing a template could ultimately help you to save time, it could also make your newsletter look more professional and appealing.

A template will give your newsletter structure, making it easy for you to ensure you haven’t forgotten any important sections. With the added bonus that it’ll be easier for your readers to find the sections they’re most interested in as well.

Microsoft Office have a list of templates here, or try using Adobe Spark’s free templates. We use an engaging template for our newsletter so students and parents can find what they need quickly, but it’s also easy to edit if you’d like to include your own school logo or details.

 

Produce your newsletter regularly

 

No one likes spam. But producing your newsletter on a regular basis, such as weekly, fortnightly or monthly, can actually increase engagement because your readers will start to expect your emails.

It’s important you send your newsletter often enough to get the information across, but not too often so people don’t switch off. And work out a good time to send your newsletter, such as first thing Monday morning, or after class on Wednesday.

Gather your resources

 

You’ll want to include:

  • School news including events, date savers, and deadlines
  • Student achievements from current or past students
  • Events and opportunities happening in your local community
  • Wider opportunities from across your region, state, and also from across Australia

You’ll need to check with your local universities, any scholarships providers, regional apprenticeship networks and you could even find useful information on social media.

 

Your content is crucial

 

Make sure that your content is relevant and easy to scan. By doing that both students and parents are more likely to utilise the resources and learn more about opportunities and topics that could help your students to focus their studies and help guide their career choices.

Include topical news items about careers and jobs, and list events that could be of interest including workshops, courses and information sessions.

Provide important information about opportunities such as work experience, scholarships, competitions, as well as further learning and post high school courses and options.

Take a deep dive into one topic per week, it could be anything from focusing on a particular career or industry, pathway or resource.

Although it’s great to keep regular features in your newsletter each week, it also good to have sections where you can change it up. That will keep things interesting for regular readers and could catch the eye of someone who’s never read your news before.

 

Keep them well rounded

 

You’ve already established that you need relevant, topical content, but that doesn’t mean anything not strictly about jobs or pathways is off limits.

Newsworthy content can also include items about:

  • skills
  • health and wellbeing
  • lifestyle (especially in relation to work-life balance)
  • preparing for life after high school
  • gap year or student exchange programs
  • volunteering opportunities and benefits
  • study tips

 

Check the details

 

It’s really important that your readers can trust your news. So make sure:

  • dates and locations are accurate
  • contact details are correct
  • all the links work
  • your information is up to date
  • read everything before you share it, whether you wrote it or someone else did

You want your newsletter to be the go-to source of information, so that they’ll open your link before thinking about going anywhere else.

Don’t forget to add all your own details too, including the best ways to contact you. You should do that every week so it’s always easy for students and parents to get in touch.
